Chromium 6 is a silver-gray coloured metal. It is lustrous, brittle and hard. It can be polished well. (Chromium- Cr, 2010)

Chemical Porperties
- Does not tarnish with air
- When it is heated it forms green chromic oxide
- Forms a layer of impermeable oxide to protect it from oxygen

Effects
- Workers exposed to Chromium 6 compounds have had
- Lung Cancer
- dermal irritations
- skin ulceration
- allergic contact dermatitis
- occupational asthma
- nasal irritation/ ulceration
- perforated nasal septa
- rhinitis
- nose bleeds
- respiratory irritation
- nasal cancer
- sinus cancer
- eye irritation/damage
- perforated eardrums
- kidney damage
- liver damage
- pulmonary congestion/edema
- epigastric pain/erosion
- discoloration of teeth

Uses- paint
- plastic
- ink
- textile dyes
- leather tanning
- wood perservatives
It is aslo found in American tap water!!(Wolfe, 2010)
Treatments
If chromium 6 is found in water iron sulphate can be added to revert it to chromium 3 which is actually a nutrient which humans need.(Dubar, 2010)There is no proven cure for chromium toxicity. For treatment the person will just have to stop the exposure and let the chromium 6 work its way out of the body naturally. There should be precautions of using protective gear and equipment when you know your are working around chromium 6.(Dogra, 2010)
Opinion
I believe that chromium 6 should not be allowed in the production of the many products and especially not be allowed in tap water. I think this because of all the harmful effects which include multiple types of cancer. The cancers and many of the other dangers are without a cure meaning that you have no sure hope when you are confronted with toxicity.
Chromium 6 contains only 22 neutrons in the Nucleus!

ReplyDeleteEWG is the Envirnomeantal Working Group and they ran tests to see Chromium 6 levels in the USA.

ReplyDeleteYour blog is really informative and it is scary how high the amounts of chromium 6 are in some of the US cities. Is chromium 6 found in canadian tap water, or do we have limits on the amount that can be in the water?
